She stretched it out curtly to Alveric; he took it, she turned away; and there was a look in her eyes as though she would have kept that sword, or kept Alveric. He turned to pour out his thanks, but she was gone. Then he turned home, and that was best for him. Your email address will not be published.

Where every kind old lady is trying to fatten you up for the stewpot. Where the Alfar nobility has a reality game show about hunting down mortal children who wandered into their realm. Where it's every pixie for herself since Queen Mab vanished and the whole place is going to the dogs - gigantic 3-headed dogs who breathe fire and pick their teeth with the bones of the dragons they just ate. Cally is running out of time to find all her siblings, un-shapechange her little sister and somehow put her dad's stuff back before he notices.

But hey, could be worse; could have caught a bad case of demon possession too. The people of the obscure village Erl demand to be ruled by a magic lord, so their ruler sends his son Alveric to Elfland to wed the elfin princess Lirazel. He brings her back to Erl and the couple have a son, but Lirazel has trouble integrating with human society. When a scheme by her father spirits her away and Elfland vanishes, Alveric begins a mad quest to find where Elfland went. Large passages are also devoted to hunting; the original edition even featured an illustration of a unicorn hunt opposite the title page.

Neil Gaiman wrote an introduction to the edition, and Christopher Lee was a featured vocalist on a progressive rock album based on the book. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks. The lord of Erl is told by the parliament of his people that they want to be ruled by a magic lord.

Obeying the immemorial custom, the lord sends his son Alveric to fetch the King of Elfland's daughter, Lirazel, to be his bride. He makes his way to Elfland, where time passes at a rate far slower than the real world, and wins her. They return to Erl and have a son, but in the manner of fairy brides of folklore, she fits uneasily with his people. She returns to the waiting arms of her father in Elfland, and her lovesick husband goes searching for her, abandoning the kingdom of Erl and wandering in a now-hopeless quest.

Beautiful imagery, combined with insightful storytelling and messages from Elfland. What an enjoyable experience! Small bits of mythology and history. But for me, it's all about the art. Unexpected, imaginative, beautiful, and inspiring. I own this!

Jun 14, Robert rated it it was ok. A book of tales and pictures, I found the book slightly amusing but plagued by an apparent belief in the 'realness' of fairies. I appreciate fairies as folklore, not reality and certainly not as a source of 'magic.
